Materials

Every ruted object starts as a block of solid wood in our family workshop in South Tyrol. We work with few materials and choose them carefully: they should feel good in the hand, age well and stay with you for many years.

We love wood

Wood has shaped life in the Alps for centuries, and it is the heart of everything we make. We buy it as solid blocks, mill each piece on our own CNC machines and then sand and finish it by hand.

Renewable

Wood grows back. Used for objects that last, it is one of the most sensible materials there is.

One of a kind

No two pieces of wood are the same. Grain, colour and small marks make every object unique.

Made to last

Solid wood does not wear out, it matures. With a little care, it gains character over the years.

Our woods

Ash wood grain

Ash

Light and calm, with a clear, lively grain. Ash is tough and flexible, which is why it has long been used for tool handles. It gives our pieces a bright, Scandinavian feel.

Oak wood grain

Oak

The classic. Oak is hard, durable and shows a strong, characterful grain. Its warm golden tone deepens slowly over the years.

Walnut wood grain

Walnut

Deep brown with a fine, flowing grain. Walnut is one of the most precious European woods and noticeably more costly than oak, which is why walnut pieces carry a small surcharge.

Cherry wood grain

Cherry

Warm, reddish and smooth. Cherry changes more than any other wood: in daylight it darkens over the first months into a rich, honey-red tone.

Swiss stone pine wood grain

Swiss stone pine

Known in South Tyrol as Zirbe, this Alpine wood grows high in the mountains. It is light, soft and carries its own gentle, resinous scent. We leave it untreated so that its natural tone and scent stay as they are.

Our desk pieces are available in ash, oak and walnut. The Oloid and our Aura diffusers also come in cherry and Swiss stone pine.

Finish

Apart from Swiss stone pine, every piece is finished by hand with a natural hard wax oil. It sits inside the wood rather than forming a film on top, so the surface still feels like wood and can always be renewed. How to look after it is explained on our care page.

Beyond wood

Where wood is not the right material, we keep things simple.

  • Glass. Each Aura diffuser holds a small glass insert for the fragrance oil, so the wood stays protected and the insert can be refilled again and again.
  • Fragrance. Our fragrances are alcohol-based compositions made for reed diffusion. They release gradually and evenly, never overpowering.
  • Rubber feet. Our trays and pen holders stand on small rubber feet that protect your desk and keep the piece in place.
  • Packaging. Your order ships in a sturdy cardboard box, wrapped in tissue paper.
